We are working hard on our first unit and only have a couple more stories to go until our final project-- writing your very own short story. You can start brainstorming now with your child about possible plots!
Please look for/discuss/sign and return the discipline plan that was sent home.
Continue checking this website for updates, due dates and reminders. 1st assignment is a self-title page due by Sept. 11th. Students are receiving class time to complete. Students will be completing their Individual Novel Study project by June 3rd (at the latest).
We will then spend the final weeks of school completing our Cross Curricular Inquiry Project: Create Your Own Country. Students become the rulers of their very own country. Based off a theme they feel passionate about they will combine and apply all ELA and SS skills we have learned this year. This project combines all topics we've studied since September. Students will have a variety of activities, options, choices and presentation strategies for this unit. Final Country Projects will be presented in our own United Nations Conference on June 21. The picture above are examples of 1 portion of this project! We will spend the month of May doing an Individual Novel Study. Students can sign a book out from the library or bring one from home. Students will have to have a main novel and a back-up novel in case they change their minds, or read faster than average.
Students will be completing daily reading comprehension activities along with the novel study. We will have a project due for this unit (sharing some details of their novel with the class) by May 30th. We are almost done our novel study.
As a final project, students will be completing their first book report of the year. This will be due by April 30. Remember to check grade-book for up to date assignment marks. We are well into our Novel Study and it seems like most students are loving the novel. Students have completed several mini projects and daily questions that are sent for homework if not complete.
Coming up will be a sign-making project in support/against of this Zomboy attending our school. Classes have 4 periods of ELA before they Poetry Unit is Due.
Due Date is March 21st. Swimming eats up many classes so even though this day seems far away with only have 4 ELA periods before then! Student Essay Marks are up in the Portal, well done everyone!
Poetry is already half way done and their final project will be writing/sharing their favourite poem. Students have completed their Essays and Speeches. Well Done!
Next up--- Poetry. At the end of the unit students will get to pick 1 of the many poems we will have completed to present in our Poetry Cafe. Please practice this at home with them and encourage their public speaking. Reminder to check the Parent Portal for grades as report cards are fast approaching! |
